It's FREE to enter
Our monthly Image Competition is sponsored by SimLab.co.uk and the winner of each category will win a professionally printed & mounted 20 x 16 Fine Art Print - ready for you to frame!
Please read the rules and guidelines below before submitting your images.
The competition is open to any photographer, you must be a Bronze member of this website to enter. Membership is free and you may enter up to 6 images per month, 1 per category, free of charge.
There are 5 fixed categories and one monthly theme. It is up to you how many categories you enter. The categories are: People, Sport, Wildlife, City and Landscape and Open.
The monthly competition will be judged by the members. No prizes at the moment but that could change! You will however be able to display the Members' Choice logo proudly on your winning images. The top 5 monthly images in each category will go forward to our annual competition. The judges reserve the right to add images to this if they feel it is appropriate. The annual competition runs over 11 months, February to December. January is the month we judge all the images for POTY and IOTY. This includes the individual category winners, the overall members' choice, the best image taken on a workshop and the overall IOTY and POTY. The winners chosen by the judges will be announced in January 2020.
Workshop images and those taken whilst be trained are eligible but must be clearly marked. There is no separate monthly prize for these images but there is a 'Best Image Taken on a Workshop' IOTY prize.
The Photographer of The Year will be the photographer who receives the highest scores across 4 of the 6 categories. If you enter more than 4 each month we will take the 4 categories that have the highest scores.

Pretty self explanatory! Images do not have to be taken in the current month but the post January 1st 2018 rule applies.
- IOTY = Image of the Year
- POTY = Photographer of the Year
- IOTM = Image of the Month
The monthly competition begins at midnight on the first day of each month and submissions end at midnight on the last day of the month. Members voting begins on the first day of the following month and ends after 7 days. Please check individual monthly competitions for precise times and dates.
The competition is open to all photographers. You will need to be registered on this website to enter and vote. Registration is free.
The competition is open to photographers only. Images cannot be submitted by models, MUAs, studios etc.
You may enter up to one image per category per month. You do not have to enter every category but the more you enter, the greater your total score will be. This counts towards the POTY Award.
Images taken whilst being trained, either on one 2 one sessions, on workshops or courses either with APT or other training companies or photographic trainers, must be marked 'workshop' in the field provided. These will receive votes in the same way as non workshop images in the monthly competition but will be judged separately in the IOTY. Images taken on training courses or workshops and not marked as such will be disqualified. Images taken on portfolio builder events, photographic holidays etc do not have to be marked as 'workshop' as long as the photographer entering the image was the sole author of the work. Images marked as 'workshop' count towards your overall score for POTY.
Images must have been taken after 31st December 2017.
An image can only be entered once during the 2019 IOTY and IOTY. Images entered in the 2018 IOTY are not allowed.
You must be the sole author of the work, except in the case of workshop images. No third party images may be used in composites.
Images must be a minimum of 2000 pixels on the longest side and be saved in JPG or PNG format. Image files must be no larger than 500k. No personal branding is allowed on the images, including signatures and logos.
Images must have a meaningful title but the title must not include any reference to the author of the work.
Images entered will be used by Appleton Photo Training and its partners for promotion and publicity purposes (and/or critique purposes) in digital and print formats. This includes, but is not limited to, publication on social media, websites, exhibitions and brochures.
The judges reserve the right to remove images that they consider inappropriate or offensive due to the content. This includes extreme violence, pornography, plagiarism etc.
Images entered in the wrong category may be moved or removed.
The IOTM is based on members' votes but the organisers reserve the right to disqualify images that do not comply with the rules of entry or if voting is appears suspicious. The IOTY is judged by a panel of 5 independent judges. The organisers and judges decision is final.

- Check for leaning verticals and horizons, you will be marked down for these
- Over exposed highlights and underexposed shadows can affect your score
