Connemara National Park

Photo Roadtrip to the West Coast of Ireland.

The Trip

The land of coastline, castles and rocky wilderness, this spectacularly diverse part of Ireland is a gift for photographers. From the mountains, forests and lakes of the Connemara National Park to the magnificent beaches and tiny harbours which fringe the wild Atlantic, the scene before you is truly inspirational. Derelict cottages and castles pepper the landscape and we are free to explore en route, stopping wherever and whenever we wish to capture the moment.

Gloriously unspoilt and totally unforgettable, the coastal route through counties Galway and Clare frequently presents the traveller with the charmingly unexpected. In April, the rich tapestry of Springtime colour and constantly changing light conditions will both thrill and challenge you; for pure landscape photography, the opportunities are infinite. Introduce the free spirit of a classically-trained ballerina or the presence of a sympathetically-styled model and you can push the boundaries into a range of other artistic genres.

The natural environment is beautiful indeed but, to give you a little variety, we also visit the delightful and historic city of Galway where you can shoot our dancer our model, or even practise your street photography. The culture is very relaxed and the people are warm, friendly and hospitable. You may overhear the odd conversation in the Irish tongue. You can certainly sample the local fare and perhaps a ‘blonde in a black dress’? To the uninitiated, that’s a pint of Guinness!

This 6-day Roadtrip is designed to release your imagination and creativity into the wild. To ensure that you make the most of the 4 full days of shooting, you will receive training geared to your level of ability. Because you will be one of only 6 photographers on the trip, you benefit from personal one-to-one attention, in addition to the group training and invaluable feedback sessions from trainer, dancer and model. You will return home fired up with knowledge and ideas, some amazing photographs and some new friends.

The beautiful County Galway

The Route

Sunday 15th: We depart from Holyhead on the 9.30am crossing to Dublin. Arrangements can be made to pick up delegates on route between Lincoln and Holyhead on the Saturday evening; there are plenty of hotels in Holyhead from around £60 per night. We will also meet those travelling by train at Holyhead station no later than 8am.

We arrive in Dublin at approximately 12.30pm and then drive across to our Hotel near Galway which will be our base for the first part of the trip. Sunday evening will be spent in the lively city of Galway seeing the sights and sampling the local food and beverages!

Monday 16th and Tuesday 17th: Over these two days we will be covering the coastline between Galway and Westport, plus the inland area of the Connemara National Park.

Wednesday 18th and Thursday 19th: We travel South from Galway along the coast of County Clare.

Friday 20th: An early start and we head for Dublin. We will make sure we have a few hours in the capital for a spot of cityscape and street photography. Our crossing is 15:10, arriving back at Holyhead around 18:10.

More details of the areas covered will be published in due course; however, a degree of flexibility is built in to take account of changing weather conditions.

The Models

We will be joined by a model and a dancer on this trip, our model is the very experienced fashion and fine art nude model, Angela Kate Hudson.

We will be confirming our professional dancer very soon.

What you will need

Obviously a camera! Apart from that, it is really up to you. We are not equipment snobs on these trips. Full frame, APSC, Micro Four Thirds or Medium Format: it is up to you. We suggest you bring a tripod but we will have them available to borrow. Lenses that cover 24mm to 200mm are common but not necessary - you could shoot the whole trip with a 50mm f/1.8 if you wanted! A speedlight would be handy but again not an essential; we will be bringing a selection plus a portable studio flash and the usual assortment of reflectors.

Clothing-wise, you will need to be able to keep warm and dry. Although we don't envisage a huge amount of walking, some may be on rough or wet ground so bring suitable boots with you.

What to expect

Our roadtrips are a mix of shooting under instruction and being left to your own devices to get creative. With only 6 photographers on the trip, we are able to tailor the level of training to meet each individual’s needs. Our models and stylist are also on hand to help you get the most out of your photography and produce your best images. It’s about developing as a photographer but we never forget that you are also on holiday to have fun!

This is what a previous "tripper" said:

“I was lucky enough to go on the May 2017 Eurotour with Andrew, Helen, and Steve and on this tour we were accompanied by Alexa through the full tour and Nadia while we were in the Venice region.

This particular tour was fairly “full on”,  and I signed up to it very early knowing full well that “total immersion” for 10 days was going to move me forward massively at this early stage in my “photographic journey”,  and the tour did just that for me!  I have since come back and got a Bronze in the Guild’s Image of the Month competition on my first submission.

You’ll be able to see what we got up to and some of our work on the tour video, so I don’t need to ramble on about that……But what the video can’t show adequately is just how tirelessly the whole team worked to make everything a success, or the great tour camaraderie and friendships we all made along the way!

I can absolutely recommend Andrew’s tours to anyone who genuinely wants to “step up a level” by working with fantastic people in great locations, all on a sensible budget.  They come in various styles, formats and durations, so it really is just a matter of choosing the right one for you!  I’ll certainly be going again!
