What You Will Learn

How to light and shoot magazine quality Beauty images: making the right choices for success

The surefire post-processing techniques you need to create perfect skin, eyes, lips and hair
Essential advice on pre-shoot preparation - from model communication to make-up artistry

You’ve seen them. In all the women’s glossy magazines. Fabulous faces with perfect skin and the rest to match. How do they do it? This course unlocks the secrets. From selecting your model right through to post-production, we cover the lot. To give you an even broader experience, we use two models and two make-up artists.

The two bywords for beauty photography are ‘flawless’ and ‘believable’. Once you know how to achieve both, you can produce any look from dewy and natural to bold and dramatic. The process is the same and we take you through each one, step-by-step, from start to finish, with two experienced beauty models, two professional make-up artists and a number of contrasting lighting setups.

The morning session begins with a brief introduction to Beauty photography. Using examples, we tease out exactly what the genre involves and what you should expect from a finished image. This part of the day lays down the foundations for a successful shoot. It includes a few words from one of our make-up artists, advice on what you should expect from your model and how to make sure your pre-shoot communication prepares everyone for a successful day. Then you pick up your camera and you’re straight into the studio for your shoot time. With only 8 photographers, we have ample time for you to shoot each of the two models individually, with personalised guidance and advice from Andrew, your trainer. This takes you to lunchtime.

The afternoon is devoted to post-processing and here’s where you get a solid grounding in how to retouch skin, eyes, lips and hair. We will work on at least two of the images and cover a range of tools and techniques:

  • Dodge and Burn
  • Frequency Separation
  • Liquify
  • Luminosity Masking
  • Blend If

…and a whole lot more.

  • Refreshments on arrival, lunch and afternoon tea
  • Classroom tuition from an award-winning trainer
  • Hands-on practical shoot time to practise and embed your learning
  • 2 models experienced in the genre
  • 2 Makeup Artists

You will need an interchangeable lens camera that can shoot in manual and has a standard hot shoe.

We suggest bringing lenses that cover the following focal lengths, don't worry if you don't have these you can complete the course with a standard kit lens.

Full Frame Sensors. 24mm - 200mm

APS 1.5 Crop 18mm - 150mm

MFT 2x Crop 14mm - 100mm

For the retouching session you will need a laptop with Photoshop CC or later.

This is an intermediate level course.

Camera Skills:

You should be familiar with your camera controls and be able to shoot in manual exposure mode. Manual focussing is not required. Previous experience of working with studio flash is not essential.

Photoshop Skills:

You should be familiar with layers and layer masking.

I've been on several of Andrews courses, workshops and trips and have to say they have all been superb.. His training style is relaxed and informal, reaching all levels of expertise  in the one course whether you are a beginner or an accomplished photographer you will always learn something from him. . the courses I have been on have given me ample shooting time (its not all classroom work and watching the trainer do all the shooting - as some trainers do) . Andrew is on-hand to help you out if required whilst you are shooting . If you are looking for a great trainer I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Andrew  and any of his many courses.. I intend booking on  more workshops in the future. Howard Ashton-Jones
