This is a Building Blocks course for beginners.

What You Will Learn

To understand your camera and how it works - the first step towards taking great pictures
How to choose the right camera settings for the type of shot you want to take
The difference between lenses and how to select the best one for the job

Is this course for me?

Are you new to photography? This is the course to get you started. If you have just got you first camera, are thinking about buying a camera or have been struggling for a while with things like focus and exposure, then come and join us. We work on the principle that, if you learn how to do things the right way from the start, you can avoid the bad habits and misconceptions that will hamper your progress as a competent photographer.

What will I get out of it?

The Camera and its Controls is just one of our Building Blocks range of courses. Each one of these step-by-step tutorials is designed to get you taking great images as quickly as possible. You will be surprised how soon things click into place once you have learnt the basics - from a professional trainer with years of experience. Andrew Appleton has trained countless photographers to award-winning standard. Is there any reason why you shouldn’t become one too? Treat this course as the first step.

What does the course include?

The day is split into 6 clear areas:

  • How to hold your camera
  • Camera types, sensor sizes and the difference between RAW files and JPEGs
  • Exposure: Why you need to understand it and how to control it
  • Exposure Modes, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, Programme, Scene Modes and Manual
  • Focusing: How to choose which focus mode is best to use
  • Lenses: Choosing the right lens can make the shot

This course lays the foundations upon which you can begin to build your photography. To make sure you get the most from any of our BB courses, we give you a copy of the course slides and notes. In addition, you will receive a set of SNAP Cards full of handy tips to help you succeed.

A camera is useful but not essential; if you have already bought one, bring it along. Much more important is enthusiasm plus a thirst for knowledge and understanding. Remember this: we all had to start somewhere and we never stop learning. Bring what you know, certainly, but egos are definitely not allowed! Rest assured, you will be in a room of people who all want the same as you. To become a photographer.

You will be supplied with a course notebook and a copy of the presentation slides. Bring a pen, notepad and memory stick.

Hot and cold drinks are provided.

  • Photographers who are shooting with a phone and thinking of moving to a camera
  • Photographers who have just got their first camera
  • Photographers who have been shooting on Auto and want to move to more creative settings

“I took my time to choose a tutor that I felt could give me what I needed, working as a coach myself I understood how important it was to pick someone that wouldn’t pick one size fits all in their teaching style. So I took my time to look around, there are many many tutors / teachers / coaches out there that have the ability to work between huge gaps in ability of their students but yet find and understand exactly what is needed to ensure that each one improves.

The Complete Photographer Course, is exceptional in it’s itinerary in how it covers off and challenges even the most competent of photographer, it covers off different genres, but it’s beauty is it’s structure of absolutely nailing the basics but mixing theory with exceptional practical work. The icing on the cake however is Andrew Appleton, putting the wonderful, engaging nature aside, his technical, creative, relaxed yet focused mind and personality really make this course exceptional. Shooting street photography in the morning, then a model shoot in the mid day sun on a beach, then onto a child shoot in ever changing afternoon light and finally a late afternoon dramatic 1940’s railway model shoot, will test everyones ability, but Andrew is there as a guiding hand, to push you to levels you didn’t think possible.

I come away from 5 days, a much better technical photographer than I was before, but I also come away with an energy, focus and plan on what I want to do next, but that’s only 75% of what you get, the final 25% are the connections you make, the friendships that you build,  the life experience you achieve, bonding with the 3 other photographers and the most amazing models that Andrew works with.

I don’t think I’ve ever felt like I’ve had so much value for money in a photography course, i simply cannot praise Andrew and Helen on this course enough, thank you”Owen Clements

A huge turning point for me this year was Andrew's Complete Photographer course. Eat, sleep, drink photography - it was fantastic Imelda Bell
